Attempted abduction of young girl puts Red Deer police on high alert

Red Deer City RCMP are investigating the suspected attempted abduction of a pre-teen girl in Normandeau on Friday morning.

Red Deer City RCMP are investigating the suspected attempted abduction of a pre-teen girl in Normandeau on Friday morning.

The older child told police she was waiting for a bus to take her to school in the 5300 block of 76th Street at about 8:10 a.m., when she was approached by a male in a green van.

The stranger exited the vehicle, approached and spoke to the girl, then grabbed her by the hand. The girl pulled away from the male and fled.

RCMP media liaison Cst. Sabrina Grunow said police have received similar reports about previous abduction attempts in North Red Deer over the past few months, with the last two being reported in March. Police aren’t sure whether the incidents are linked.

In connection with Friday’s suspected attempted abduction, police are seeking a Caucasian male in his 30s with two missing bottom teeth. He was wearing a dark shirt, blue jeans with holes, and running shoes.

His vehicle is described as a green van, possibly a Dodge Caravan, with front driver’s side damage near the bottom, and possible damage to the tailgate area of the vehicle.

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has information about the suspect’s identity, to call Red Deer City RCMP at 403-343-5575. “If anyone has seen something, we would appreciate them calling,” said Grunow.

Those who wish to remain anonymous can call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477. If information leads to an arrest, tipsters are eligible for a reward up to $2,000.
