Award-winning author and former Red Deerian Leslie Greentree will be back in the city this month for a social evening and book reading.

Greentree has written a new book of short stories, Not the Apocalypse I Was Hoping For. It’s her fourth publication, following Guys Named Bill, Go-Go Dancing With Elvis, and A Minor Planet for You.

The 14 new stories take on the social collective, death, art, politics and the search for existential happiness. Not the Apocalypse has been described as darkly funny and deeply compelling.

In one tale, an actress turns her cancer diagnosis into an art installation, in others a teacher befriends a gargoyle; a man watches his dream of becoming a hero burn with the city around him; and a new mother makes a startling discovery about her priorities after her dog gets sick.

A reading from the book by Greentree, who’s now based in Edmonton, will be held Sept. 17 at Sunworks in Red Deer. The evening starts at 5:30 p.m. with a meet-and-greet with wine, charcuterie selection and other snacks. The book reading and signing is at 7 p.m. in a meditation studio just below Sunworks, followed by dessert and a chat at 8:30 p.m.

Not the Apocalypse I Was Hoping For is published by the University of Calgary Press.

Greentree’s previous works have won CBC literary competitions for poetry and fiction, and have been shortlisted for the Griffin Poetry Prize and the Writer’s Guild of Alberta and Humber Creative Nonfiction awards.
