Blackfalds RCMP nab suspect with loaded sawed-off shotgun

Suspect fled after suspicious public alerted police

Blackfalds RCMP have arrested and charged a man who fled them and was later found in possession of a sawed-off shotgun and ammunition.

On Monday at around 5:45 pm, police were alerted by the public of an erratic driver in a field east of Red Deer. They located the vehicle, however the occupants fled on foot so containment was set up while the Red Deer RCMP dog services attended the scene.

A short time later, a male suspect was brought to the attention of one of the RCMP members at the scene. The man fled on foot but was located and placed under arrest a short distance away by the pursing RCMP officer. Investigations revealed the man was was in possession of a sawed off shotgun and ammunition.

The man lied about his identity but police were able to confirm his true identity. The 31-year-old now faces multiple charges stemming from this event, including firearms offences. He was also wanted on 18 outstanding warrants from Red Deer City and Rocky Mountain House RCMP.

He is being held in custody and is to appear at the Red Deer provincial court on all matters on Thursday.
