A blown fuse in a downtown transformer caused a loud bang, shook nearby buildings and tossed black smoke into the air on Wednesday.

The city’s Electric, Light and Power department said the incident happened at about 5:30 p.m. at the transformer located at 5425-45 St., near Troubled Monk. Some businesses in the area were without power for a few hours.

A resident, who lives about two blocks away, heard and felt the blast. From her balcony, she saw dark, thick smoke billow upwards near Taylor Avenue.

“We felt it shake the whole building. I couldn’t tell what kind of explosion it was,” she said.

“I wouldn’t have even looked into it if it hadn’t shook our building.”
