With Clean Air Day this week, the Parkland Airshed Management Zone is hosting an event to honour the occasion.

Clean Air Day is an international event to “recognize how important good air quality is to our health, our environment, and the economy”.

Although Clean Air Day was celebrated around the world on June 8, the local group will be holding its first-ever Blue Skies Bicycle Ride on Sunday, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in partnership with the Kerry Wood Nature Centre.

According to a release, individuals are being encouraged to decorate their bikes for a parade that will take place between 2 and 3 p.m. Attendees can decorate their bike with recycled materials prior to attending or at the event.

“We are excited to be celebrating Clean Air Day with a weekend fun, family-friendly, Blue Skies Bicycle Ride event. Bicycles are a great active transportation option that reduce emissions, thus contributing to cleaner air” said Executive Director, Kevin Warren.

The 2022 international Clean Air Day focus is on air quality in a changing climate. Some air pollutants, such as car emissions, contribute to climate change.

“We can all help to reduce these air pollutants by taking public transit or choosing active transportation, such as biking and walking,” the release states.
