WHITESHELL, Man. — Police say a boater’s body was pulled from the waters of Whiteshell River in southeastern Manitoba on Saturday after he disappeared while harvesting wild rice.

RCMP in Lac du Bonnet, Man., say they were called to the river at 10:30 a.m. on Friday when the boater failed to return to his camp.

They say another harvester in a second boat set out from the main camp to try and find the man when he found the missing man’s air boat submerged in 4.5 metres of water.

Police say the other harvester searched for the boater but couldn’t find him.

They say officers scoured the waters with representatives from Sustainable Development Manitoba and several private boats, but couldn’t find the man’s body on Friday.

They say they returned to the scene on Saturday morning with the Hutterian Emergency Aquatic Response Team and found the 49-year-old’s body.

An investigation is ongoing.
