EDMONTON — Alberta’s top infrastructure official says no actual construction work was done on a penthouse ordered by former premier Alison Redford.
Marcia Nelson told an Alberta legislature committee that some wiring and heating-duct work was done, but the space was used as a meeting room after the project was cancelled in 2012.
Nelson made the comments in response to questions from the Opposition Wildrose party at an all-party public accounts committee.
Shortly after Redford resigned in March, it was learned her office had ordered construction of a lavish penthouse for her on top of a government building near the legislature.
Former infrastructure minister Ric McIver killed the project in January, saying later it was a poor use of taxpayer dollars.
Redford has refused to say why her office ordered the penthouse, which has since been dubbed the Sky Palace.
Nelson confirmed that design costs for the penthouse were $173,000.
