Wetaskiwin RCMP has charged a 31-year-old man who allegedly had a vehicle theft attempt thwarted by a bus driver.

On Feb. 9, police received a report of a vehicle being stolen. Plainclothes officers located and surveilled the vehicle.

Police say the suspect “drove away in a dangerous manner” down 49 Street in Wetaskiwin. The officers lost sight of the vehicle, which was found abandoned a short distance away.

The suspect was found trying to steal a Wetaskiwin Transit Handi-van with four people inside, claims RCMP. The bus driver prevented the suspect from successfully driving away, and the suspect fled from the bus and was immediately arrested by police, according to a RCMP statement issued Thursday.

“Quick thinking from the bus driver helped prevent another act of a stolen vehicle from occurring, as well as preventing kidnapping a number of people from Wetaskiwin,” said RCMP Cpl. Troy Savinkoff.

The 31-year-old is charged with two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, driving while disqualified and dangerous driving. He was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in court next Tuesday.
