Red Deer Emergency Services is reminding business owners to keep emergency exits clear, as many have adjusted entries and exits with COVID-19 protocols.

Restaurant, food service, retail and assembly businesses are being asked to pay “special attention” to pathways and emergency exits as they reorganize and amend operations to meet new regulations for COVID-19, the City of Red Deer said in a news release Saturday afternoon.

“We understand the enormous stress local businesses are already facing. We made changes to operational processes and have put additional measures in place in our facilities too, but emergency preparedness is absolutely essential,” said fire marshal Tim Kivell.

“Businesses need to ensure pathways and exits remain clear.”

All pathways, entrances and exits must remain fully functional at all times, and cannot be blocked by signage or other structures, as they are designed to facilitate evacuation in the event of an emergency.

“We know this can be challenging amid a crisis and we are here to help,” said Kivell.

“Business owners can contact us at any time if they have questions or concerns about keeping their business and staff safe in an emergency.”

Red Deer Emergency Services is also reminding residents to check their smoke alarms at home.

Red Deer business owners with questions or concerns about emergency preparedness can reach out to Red Deer Emergency Services’ Fire Prevention Bureau at prevention@reddeer.ca.
