RCMP are searching for a man who stabbed a cab driver downtown Wednesday morning.

The cabbie was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries after the attack about 5:50 a.m. near 44th Street and 48th Avenue.

RCMP said a lone male inside the taxi pulled a knife and stabbed the driver before fleeing on foot.

A police dog team was called in but no arrest has been made yet.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, about 183 to 185 cm tall (six-foot to six-foot-one). He was wearing a grey, hooded sweater with a zipper.

An RCMP forensic identification team remains on scene and police were asking the public to avoid 48th Avenue between 45th and 48th Streets while the investigation continues.
