CALGARY — The Calgary Zoo says it has made a number of changes to one of its habitats, including alterations officials promise will prevent future incidents of gorillas getting out of their enclosures.

The Rainforest building is home to fish, snakes, birds, gorillas and soon mandrills, a type of monkey.

The improvements, which cost $5.2 million, are mostly in areas not seen by the public, such as gates, fencing, mechanical systems and flooring.

In the gorilla enclosure, sensors have been installed, lighting has been improved and the mesh on the cages has been made smaller.

Twice last year, gorillas got into a kitchen area, once because a door was unlatched by a keeper, who was then roughed up by the primates.

The sensor lights now installed will indicate if any doors are open.
