A Red Deer area woman died Sunday after she fell into a campfire while camping with her common-law partner over the weekend.

The 53-year-old died in a Calgary hospital Sunday morning.

Olds RCMP and emergency services were called to the private campground north of Torrington at 6 a.m. Sunday to a report of a woman sustaining severe burns after falling into a campfire.

The woman was airlifted by STARS air ambulance. Olds RCMP Cpl. Mike Black said the original plan was to take the woman to Red Deer, but it was decided that she instead needed to go to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary.

She was pronounced dead in hospital at about 8:30 a.m.

An autopsy was performed and toxicology tests are expected to aid the determination of the cause of death. But Black said it is not being treated as suspicious and “it appears to be a tragic accident.”

Black said next of kin have been notified and they have asked that the name of victim not be released.
