A candlelight vigil is being planned for those who died due to the COVID-19 outbreak at Olymel in Red Deer.

The vigil is scheduled to take place in the green space in front of the pork-processing plant at 4 p.m. Sunday.

“I’ve been following the stories and I want to show some support for the lives that have been lost and the workers who are still going to work in fear,” said Red Deer’s Kyla Courte, vigil organizer.

“It felt so sad to have an outbreak like this at home.”

Courte said she isn’t sure how many people will come out to the vigil, but anyone who attends is asked to wear a mask and remain physically distancing from each other.

“Anyone in the community who wants to support the people going through this is welcome. I don’t really have any expectations,” she said.

“We want to let workers know if they don’t feel safe, there is support from the community.”
