The lawyer for a man accused in the shooting death of a Blackfalds man on a rural road near Eckville in 2022 was in Red Deer’s Court of Justice on Wednesday.

Red Deer lawyer George Lebessis is representing Dustin Charles Lemay-Storms, who has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Stephen Pond, 46, on June 20, 2022.

Pond was driving his pickup with his wife in the passenger seat on a rural road just south of Eckville around 4 a.m. on June 20 when a suspect opened fire. Pond was badly injured and died while being transported to an Edmonton hospital by STARS. His wife was uninjured.

After a lengthy investigation by RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit Lemay-Storms was arrested on March 30 and charged. He is in Edmonton Remand Centre and did not appear for Wednesday’s court date.

Lebessis told Justice Jim Hunter he is still awaiting disclosure and asked that the case be adjourned for several weeks. The case returns to court on May 10.
