After a lengthy absence, the Stettler region will be hosting the ‘Heartland Cattlemen’s Classic’ cattle show on Jan. 31st and Feb. 1st.
The Stettler Ag. Society is organizing the event, and support, so far, has been great. According to organizers, the event will be held in a very similar format to the annual ‘Canadian Bull Congress’ held in Camrose.
The exhibition component of the Cattlemen’s Classic will open at noon on Jan. 30th and will remain open throughout the hours of the show. A junior Heifer & Steer show will be held on Jan. 31st at 3 p.m, followed by a roast-beef supper that evening at the Stettler Community Hall.
On Feb. 1st, Vision Credit Union will be sponsoring a free breakfast at the community hall.
The open heifer show will open at 10 a.m, the single bull show will take place at noon and the ‘Pair of Bulls Show’ will take place at 2 p.m.
A variety of commercial and breeding operators will also be displaying their cattle over the course of the event.
Enthusiasm for the show returning to the region has been widespread, with some people wanting to show their cattle already finding themselves on a wait-list.
The trade show, which will be going on at the same time, is also nearly sold out. Organizers are expecting to have the vendor list for the show to be finalized in the next few days as well. A variety of cattle-themed vendors will be presenting at the trade show, including some clothing.
“It (the show) is an opportunity to bring cattle to the community,” said Marj Savage, a member/administrator at the Agricultural Society.
“Stettler, historically, has been a very strong cattle community. It was a real hub for the cattle industry.”
There hasn’t been a show like the Cattlemen’s Classic in the region since at least 2006, according to organizers.
There will be no gate fee, and members of the community are encouraged to check out the exhibition and trade show. The roast beef supper being held on Jan. 31st is open to the public, and tickets are available by contacting the Ag. Society at (403) 742-6288.
