The organization hopes every woman feels invincible like Wonder Woman during the International Women’s Day Awards Luncheon.

The event will celebrate women from all walks of life on Thursday.

The awards celebrate achievements of women who pave the way for others. The luncheon has been an annual event for more than 15 years.

Sherri Smith, a Soroptimist International of Central Alberta member, said the awards celebrate those who are breaking the glass ceiling in politics, business or arts and culture.

“When you come together and celebrate (these women) you are also encouraging other women to help other women, because when we all help each other then we get further ahead, and hopefully break the gender inequalities that exist in our society,” said Smith.

This year, four women from Central Alberta will be honoured.

The Violet Richardson Award, for ages 14 to 17, will go to Sylvan Lake resident Brynne Takhar. The Grade 11 student attends École H. J. Cody School and is active with the school’s Interact Club (a high school division of Rotary Club).

The Soroptimist Ruby Award goes to women who are making a difference in the lives of other women. This year, the award recipient is Lizzy Walker, a Red Deer resident.

Two Red Deer College students and single mothers, Lindsey Riley and Frederique Ouellet, will be given the Live Your Dream Award. This award is for those women who are the financial heads in their families.

Smith said two Red Feather Women will take the stage as guest speakers to talk about their group and the kind of difference they are making in the community – one day at a time.

Last year, three Central Alberta women were handed out awards at the luncheon.

The Live Your Dream Award was granted to RDC student Tara Wells. The Violet Richardson Award was given to Anmol Multani, for her volunteer work at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre. The Ruby Award was granted to Diane Gardipy at the Red Deer Native Friendship Centre.

The luncheon is at the Radisson Hotel in Red Deer between 11:30 to 1:30 p.m.
