Central Albertans were able to buy used items while supporting local crime prevention programs this past weekend.

The Central Alberta Crime Prevention Centre hosted its third annual garage sale at the Pidherney Centre from Thursday to Sunday.

Thursday offered a special VIP night. The garage sale was then open to the Public for the following three days.

“We got a ton of donations this year for the garage sale. We’re very thankful for everyone who donated,” said Denise Rambow, CACPC programs and services co-ordinator.

“We had lots of people come out over Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday – everything was 50 per cent off on Sunday.”

Rambow said this is probably the best garage sale yet for the CACPC.

“We’ll have another garage sale next year. We love doing it and love the support we get from the community,” said Rambow.

The CACPC is a registered nonprofit charity that has been helping residents, businesses and communities with issues of crime since 2012.

Money raised at the event will be used to help operate the programs and services provided by the centre.

“This money will go towards helping with things like CPTED, which is Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design,” she said.

CPTED focuses on the effects of the built environment and its impact on human behaviour, according to the CACPC website. It is an internationally accepted crime prevention practice that follows four principles and incorporates a community approach.

The CACPC offers a variety of CPTED services, including basic/advanced certificate courses, reviews, assessments and reports.

CACPC staff who perform CPTED reviews, assessments and provide reports hold a minimum of an Advanced CPTED Certificate, have significant field experience with a variety of properties and types of issues/concerns. In addition, CACPC CPTED Course Instructors are experienced practitioners and hold CPTED Professional Designations through the National Institute of Crime Prevention.
