High school students will receive help choosing the right career path at a forum in Red Deer next week.
Central Alberta career professionals will be Holiday Inn & Suites Red Deer South on March 7 between 10 and 1 p.m to answer student questions.
Career mentors from about 33 industries will be at the Junior Achievement (JA) of Southern Alberta World of Choices career forum from various industries like law, policing, business and social media.
Stephanie Jones, regional coordinator for Central Alberta for JA Southern Alberta, said more than 250 high school students will attend.
Jones said the talks will focus on careers in Central Alberta.
The volunteer career mentors will talk about what path they took to get into their line of work, how much money they make, what their education was like and what their career opportunities would be like moving forward.
They will also discuss pros and cons of each industry and what the work style looks like – whether it’s a hands on job or something that requires more desk time, said Jones.
She said there’s a need for such a forum for high school students.
“For example – by bringing in a lawyer and chiropractor – these are people whose time is very valuable and students probably wouldn’t get the chance to talk to those types of people outside of this event,” she said.
The theme of the fifth annual event in Red Deer is “The Future is…”
The hope is that sentence will help students, decide for themselves, what their future would like like, said Jones.
In the first year, the forum was attended by close to 100 students, and since then it has grown immensely, Jones said.
“The teachers and students love it and we have positive feedback from students,” she said.
