This long-awaited decision comes following months of hard campaigning by Calgary’s LGBTQ+ community, says the local Pride society.

Board chair Lenny Gallant hoped this will continue the wave of progress across Alberta.

“We stand fully behind the total and complete ban on any and all forms of conversion therapy,” said Gallant. “Red Deer city council failed to implement a similar ban earlier this year, making our city look bigoted and putting us on the wrong side of history. Central Alberta Pride Society will continue working with council to ban conversion therapy and other bigoted practices in our city.”

Following this victory for LGBTQ+ rights, Central Alberta Pride Society renewed the call for Red Deer city council and Mayor Tara Veer to revisit a conversion therapy ban in the very near future.

The Society reiterated to council members how harmful this practice is to members of our community and offered support to councillors looking for education on the topic.

CAPS believes that as Alberta’s fourth largest city, “we should be leaders and not followers when it comes to the progress of society.”
