Preparations are underway for Central Alberta Pride Week, scheduled for August 8 to 14.

Central Alberta Pride Society has been putting on the annual Pride celebration since 2013, which continues to grow with new partnerships and local artists, corporate sponsors and the City of Red Deer.

The society’s board of directors said Pride Week is held in August in central Alberta, instead of the International Pride Month of June, so local activities don’t compete with other Pride organizations and to give people the opportunity to celebrate over a longer period of time.

“Many other cities have taken the same approach and no matter when Pride is, we get the opportunity to be visible and come together to celebrate who we are as a community,” the directors said in a statement.

Pride Week will also feature local talent.

“We will continue to ensure that our focus is on our central Alberta community and talents, with making sure our local musicians and drag queens who perform at Pride in the Park and our Drag Show take centre stage at the events.

“We can’t wait to see you at Central Alberta Pride Week. Keep an eye on our social media as we start to unveil what we have in store for you this year.”
