RCMP utilized a bait vehicle within the town of Ponoka over the past month.

On Feb. 26, the bait vehicle — a decoy used by police to catch car thieves — was placed on the east side of Ponoka, and within six hours, it was stolen.

After a short distance, the vehicle became stuck in the ditch and was abandoned. A suspect was identified and arrested last Friday.

Guy Roasting, 22, of Pigeon Lake was charged with theft of a truck, mischief over $5,000, failing to comply with release order conditions and driving while prohibited.

He was released after a judicial hearing and will be appearing in Ponoka provincial court on March 19.

Bait vehicles will continue to be used at various times and places in Ponoka, say police.

“Targeting people who steal vehicles, or who attempt to steal from vehicles, is just one component of the ongoing crime reduction strategies in the town of Ponoka and across the province of Alberta,” the RCMP says in a news release.
