The Central Alberta Refugee Effort and several other community organizations are set to host the seventh annual CommUnity Power of One event.

The event, which will take place on March 19, will commemorate the UNHCR International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which takes place on March 21.

The goal of the event in Red Deer is to envision “a peaceful community where harmony is a result of diversity and to equip “people with the tools, knowledge, and resources to continue the conversation.”

The keynote speakers for the event include Zarqa Nawaz, writer of Little Mosque on the Prairie and Renee Vaugeois, Executive Director for the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights.

Attendees will have ten workshops to choose from throughout the day and a panel to discuss challenges, resources, and tools to prepare us for future action planning as we continue the conversations and try to eliminate racism in our communities.

The event will take place from 8.30 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Red Deer Polytechnic in the Cenovus Centre.
