A pair of Red Deer restaurants will be part of a national campaign to help Canadian food banks in February.

Cilantro and Chive and Memphis Blues BBQ are among nearly 100 restaurants across the country taking part in Burger it Forward which is aimed at relieving the growing food insecurity in Canada. There are 19 restaurants participating across Alberta.

“As food banks struggle to keep up with demand, Burger It Forward aims to “beef up” the protein portion of food bank offerings while supporting locally owned restaurants,” the release reads.

Each participating restaurant will feature a select burger for the campaign. For every campaign-featured burger purchase, Canada Beef will donate the equivalent of one meal to Food Banks Canada, up to a maximum of 20,000 meals, based on Food Banks Canada meal metrics of $1 equals two meals.

Provincial beef cattle farmer and rancher associations in each participating region have joined the campaign by making donations to regional food banks with either ground beef donations or a cash contribution.

Alberta Beef Producers are donating $2,500 to both the Calgary Food Bank and Edmonton’s Food Bank for the purchase of ground beef.

“As a not-for-profit organization that supports and promotes nourishing food that comes from Canadian farmers, one of the goals of this campaign is to help support the efforts of food banks and hunger relief programs so Canadians don’t go hungry,” says Joyce Parslow, Executive Director of Consumer Marketing at Canada Beef.

“Food insecurity continues to grow in our country, and we want to support those affected the most.”
