Central Alberta suspect bit by police dog, ASIRT investigate

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is continuing to investigate a suspect who was bit by a police dog while being arrested by Maskwacis RCMP on Sept. 10.

RCMP said Maskwacis RCMP received a complaint at about 9 p.m. about a man at a house on the Samson Cree Nation who was wanted on several warrants, including matters involving firearms.

The man left the house on foot just prior to police arriving and officers set up a containment of the nearby rural area. The emergency response team, police dog services and air services were contacted for support.

The dog bit the suspect on his right inner thigh at about 10 p.m. after a police dog and officer found him100 to 150 metres from the house. The man, who was seriously injured, was transported to hospital.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team began its investigation on Sept. 13 and will examine the circumstances surrounding the use of force. Anyone who may have been in the area and may have witnessed these events and/or may have video is asked to contact investigators at 780-644-1483.
