A drone helped Rocky Mountain House RCMP locate an armed suspect on Monday.
Rocky RCMP said a report came in at 9:31 a.m. about a man who broke into a gun cabinet and stole a firearm and ammunition at the local Canadian Tire store.
The suspect allegedly pointed the firearm at employees before running out the door. Responding officers saw him run into a wooded area.
Police issued a Police Initiated Public Alert to area residents and secured the area.
With the use of a drone, RCMP were able to locate the suspect who was taken into custody. The firearm was later found in the wooded area with the assistance of an RCMP dog.
A 51-year-old Rocky Mountain House man was charged with theft of a firearm, mischief, two counts of assault with a weapon, three counts of failing to comply with probation order, and seven counts of firearms offences.
He was remanded into custody with a court appearance scheduled for Sept. 6 at Alberta Court of Justice in Rocky Mountain House.
