James Moorhouse, from the Red Deer area, was one of 13 teenagers appointed to the national youth council BGC Canada.

As a member of the national council for Boys and Girls Clubs Canada, Moorhouse will serve as an ambassador and influence decision-making on issues related to young people. He will also be able to bring forward concerns and ideas that spring from our local youths, said Hez Peter, a team leader with the organization.

Moorhouse is a recent graduate of H. J. Cody School in Sylvan Lake, who now works as a part-time program leader with the BGC Canada. “He’s a very thoughtful young man and a big advocate for mental health… We are very proud of him,” Peter added.

Moorhouse became interested in sitting on the national council after attending a Vancouver conference last year with nine other youths. The 18-year-old went through a three-stage interview process to get the board appointment. He also met the CEO of Boys and Girls Clubs Canada in Toronto.

The non-profit organization for youths has operated in Red Deer since the mid 1980s.
