People wanting to learn more about Central Alberta sport organizations now have a place to go.

Central Sport hosted the grand opening ceremony for its new physical office location inside the Collicutt Centre on Thursday.

“Central Sport has been operational for about three or four months, but now we’re able to have the public come to this office,” said Trevor Thomas, Central Sport CEO.

“People can come in, get information on local sport organizations. We’re hoping to house registration nights as well. We want to be that hub for local sport organizations and community members to find out about sports.”

Formed as a legacy of the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Central Sport aims to connect Central Alberta sport to build on the momentum created by the Games and to position Central Alberta as a leader in sport.

It offers a variety of services, including an online sport directory, volunteer database, sport-focused communication, sport-hosting support, resources for sport organizations, event bid development and more.

Thomas said a big element of Central Sport is its ability to supply volunteers for sport events. The first event Central Sport supplied volunteers for was the 2023 Men’s AAA Nationals in Red Deer – 60-plus people volunteered 200 hours, he noted.

Sports are an important part of the community, said Thomas.

“Sport creates a camaraderie and creates something to look forward to for kids and adults,” he said.

“It’s that healthy lifestyle we’re really trying to incorporate. There are so many great local sports organizations in Central Alberta that a lot of people don’t know about. It’s our job to help educate the public … and help create try-free days, so people can try something before they have to commit to it.”

Central Sport currently operates within Red Deer and Red Deer County, but work is being done to incorporate sport organizations in other Central Alberta communities.
