Champion fidder plays at Red Deer church’s fundraising concert

Champion fiddler Scott Woods and his band will perform an Old Time Country Christmas Concert Tuesday.

The 7 p.m. show is at Sunnybrook United Church, 12 Stanton St. and is a fundraiser for the church.

Heartfelt renditions of yuletide songs will be performed, interspersed with family humour, some trick fiddling and step dancing.

Woods is a Canadian fiddling champion, whose famous trick fiddling routine – he turns somersaults and walks on a barrel while playing his fiddle — has earned him the nickname “The Flippin’ Fiddler,” as well as three consecutive Canadian Novelty Fiddle Championship titles. In 2018 Scott was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Association, for his extensive contribution to the preservation of Canadian Fiddle Music.

The Ontarian will be playing the violin and singing along with his “all-star” band, made up of his daughter, Kendra Woods Norris on piano, fiddle, accordion and vocals, Steven Pittico and Naomi Bristow on guitars and vocals, and Leo Stock providing drumming, step dancing fiddle and vocals.

For tickets, call the church.
