A child was taken to hospital after being hit by a vehicle while crossing a Penhold street.

Monday morning, Penhold fire crews were called to the incident on Hwy 2A and Hawkridge Boulevard in the town south of Red Deer.

Acting fire Lt. Bailey McKay said an 11-year-old boy was heading to school when he was struck by the vehicle.

The child was in the crosswalk and, according to McKay, the lights were activated when he was hit.

The child was transported to hospital by EMS with non-life threatening injuries.

Innisfail RCMP are investigating. The 79-year-old driver was not inured. Police said charges are pending.
