The City of Red Deer says it is happy with decisions to gradually reopening the economy, and says it’s closely reviewing how it applies to the community, as well as programs and services.

“We’re pleased the premier and our provincial counterparts have taken a phased approach to reopening the economy,” said Mayor Tara Veer.

“The health and safety of our residents remains our top priority, and above all, we are still committed to mitigating further spread of COVID-19.

“In the coming days, we will work to review the provincial relaunch plan, and adjust local restrictions in Red Deer accordingly.”

The city remains under a state of local emergency, giving the municipality access to additional resources and special powers, said Veer.

“While the plan provides a blueprint for the gradual return to regular operations and business, we know we still have a long road to full recovery,” said Veer.

“Opening businesses will provide a much-needed boost to our local economy and will mean some people are able to return to work.”

With modified provincial restrictions now announced, the city will look at adjustments to limits imposed in municipal public spaces, said the mayor.

Many controls will remain in place, with restrictions only modified or adjusted in alignment with the provincial strategy.

“Despite the provincial relaunch strategy, we need citizens to continue to be vigilant in helping prevent the spread,” said city manager Allan Seabrooke.

“We fully anticipate adjustments and revised restrictions as the plan unfolds, but this will only work if our community, and our citizens, continue to do what is necessary as we safely work through the relaunch strategy.”
