The Red Deer River may pose dangers this weekend because of faster flow and the possibility the river will carry debris.
The City of Red Deer is warning people who are in or around the Red Deer River this weekend to closely supervise children, pets and teens.
Unusual precipitation upstream of the Dickson Dam is expected to impact the Red Deer river.
If heavy rainfall occurs in the region the Dickson Dam may release more water than usual.
“At this time of the year, water on the river typically flows anywhere from 40 to 60 cubic metres per second,” said Karen Mann, emergency management co-ordinator.
“As a result of increased precipitation throughout the province over the weekend, we could see an increase to anywhere from 150 to 300 cubic metres per second. We want people to be careful near the river banks, especially places like Three Mile Bend and Fort Normandeau,” Mann said.
Increased water flows could also result in additional debris, which is hazardous to anyone in a watercraft. Those on the water are reminded to wear approved life-jackets at all time.
Although waterflow will be faster, no flooding is expected.
