College offers free parking on evenings, weekends, some events

People who want to attend evening performances or events at Red Deer College can park free starting on Sunday.

People who want to attend evening performances or events at Red Deer College can park free starting on Sunday.

Community feedback has helped bring free weekend and after-hours parking to public lots at Red Deer College.

Lots excluded from this plan are Lot K, parking near Bethany Collegeside and metered parking near the college entrances.

In all other public lots, parking will be free on weekdays after 5 p.m., and on weekends and holidays. Parking will also be free in July and August.

Students and the public will have assigned lots during regular business hours.

Staff and faculty will have assigned lots exclusively for day use.

Fees for parking in public parking lots P East and P West will remain in place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Those fees are $2 per hour to a maximum of $8 a day.

Fees for public parking near the entrances with meters will be $2 an hour from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Doug Sharp, director of facilities at the college, said the changes are the first step toward an online parking system that the college plans to implement next year.

“This is really a win-win for our students, faculty and staff who park on our main campus every day and for our community who come here throughout the year for camps, concerts and other events,” Sharp said.
