A two-vehicle collision on Hwy 2, near the Hwy 27 Olds overpass, sent three people to Calgary Foothills Hospital with serious injuries on Saturday afternoon.

A two-vehicle collision on Hwy 2, near the Hwy 27 Olds overpass, sent three people to Calgary Foothills Hospital with serious injuries on Saturday afternoon.

Road conditions were poor, with icy sections and blowing snow at the time of the crash and RCMP were advising motorists not to travel on the roads unless absolutely necessary on Saturday.

Several vehicles were also reported to be in the ditch, along Hwy 2, from the Hwy 11A overpass to the Hwy 13 overpass, by Ponoka Traffic Services.

Innisfail RCMP traffic services, Town of Olds Fire Department fire-medics and Olds Alberta Sheriffs were dispatched to scene at 12:12 p.m. on Saturday.

RCMP believe a one-tonne pick up truck pulling a horse trailer was travelling northbound on Hwy 2 when it lost control and crossed into southbound traffic. Police said a car was struck by the truck, causing extensive damage to both vehicles, which came to rest in the southbound lanes of Hwy 2.

Police said the 19-year-old male driver of the car and a 21-year-old female passenger had to be taken to Calgary Foothills Hospital with serious non-life threatening injuries. The driver was trapped in the car and had to be rescued using the Jaws of Life. A 22-year-old male passenger suffered from a broken wrist and was taken to Olds Hospital and Care Centre.

The 56-year-old male driver of the truck was not wearing his seatbelt and was thrown from his vehicle, suffering serious life-threatening injuries and was taken to Calgary Foothills Hospital. The cab of his truck was left intact. He was the only person in the vehicle. A horse in the horse trailer wasn’t injured and was picked up by a family friend of the injured driver.

The collision is still under investigation.
