CommUnity Power of One event March 18 at Red Deer Polytechnic

Hundreds of central Albertans are expected at the eighth-annual CommUnity Power of One event in Red Deer on March 18th.

The event to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Red Deer Polytechnic, in the Cenovus Learning Common.

In previous years, it attracted an audience of about 200-500 people.

With the themes words “Remember, Reimagine and Rebuild,” the goal of this year’s CommUnity Power of One event is to build awareness and understanding around the history and experiences people have had with racial discrimination, and to create more harmony between different ethnicities, and cultures.

“We aim to leave the audience with inspiration, skills, and tools to take action to make a positive change around racial issues, and to rebuild relationships with more intentionality,” say organizers.

Keynote speakers are Dr. Lisa Tink, of the University of Alberta, and Chantal Chagnon, an indigenous musician, storyteller and activist. There will be be nine breakout sessions and a Sharing Circle. Please visit Eventbrite for more information.

The program is organised by Care for Newcomers, Catholic Social Services – Settlement, Lifelong Learning Council of Red Deer, RCMP, Red Deer Cultural Heritage Society, Red Deer Polytechnic, Red Deer Public Library, the Francophone Albertaine au Plurielle, and The City of Red Deer.
