St. Lorenzo Ruiz Middle School is on schedule to open its doors to students this fall.

“Everything is progressing really nicely so we’re set for the end of June,” said principal Rob Coumont about the completion date for construction of the new Grade 6 to 9 school.

“The construction crew is working really hard on the project, and doing a great job, and we’re excited for our families to become part of the St. Lorenzo Ruiz community.”

Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools newest construction project, located at 150 Kingston Dr. in Kentwood, will alleviate capacity pressure on the jurisdiction’s middle schools in Red Deer.

The jurisdiction currently operates two kindergarten to Grade 9 schools, and two Grade 6 to 9 schools, in the city.

Coumont said he will be keeping the community up to date on the project with short videos every two weeks which will be available on St. Lorenzo Ruiz Middle School Facebook page.

The $28.8-million project broke ground in October 2021 and construction started the following spring.

Coumont said the two-storey school is similar in design to St. Francis of Assisi Middle School, with lots of natural light. St. Lorenzo Ruiz will have 28 learning spaces, including 17 classrooms.

The school will follow a traditional school calendar with traditional programming, but it will include an e-sports class option.

“That’s something we’re really excited about.”

At capacity, the school will accommodate 737 students. The student population is initially expected to be about 300.
