Bowden Institution is in lockdown and the hunt is on for an inmate from Bowden Institution who is considered armed and dangerous.

Shawn Thomas Evjen was discovered to be missing from the medium security prison at 9:17 p.m. on Monday.

The Rocky Mountain House man is serving a 24-year and six-month sentence for armed robbery, robbery using a firearm, assaulting a peace officer, disguise with intent and possession of a weapon.

He was sentenced in July 1985 and Evjen was released in February.

Evjen returned to prison after he was charged with another armed robbery in Red Deer.

Police consider Evjen a high risk to reoffend.

Evjen is described as 170 cm tall (five foot seven inches) and weighs 75 kgs (166 pounds). He has red hair and blue eyes.

His right forearm is covered with tattoos of a skull and dragon. He also has a tattoo of a woman and dragon on his shoulders and tattoos of a woman, dragon, bear and warrior on his chest.

Correction Service of Canada is working with local law enforcement agencies and will review the circumstances surrounding his escape.

Anyone who has seen Evjen or may know him are asked to contact their local police immediately or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Police warn people not to approach Evjen.
