COVID-19 cases rising, 27 more deaths

Another 1,858 COVID-19 cases were identified, and 27 new virus-related deaths were reported in Alberta between Aug. 16 and Aug. 23.

The numbers are up from the 1,661 COVID-19 cases and and equals the 27 deaths that were identified in the province the previous week.

There have now been a total of 4,748 deaths connected to COVID in Alberta.

The provincial government released the Aug. 16 to 23 COVID numbers Wednesday, showing there are currently 870 hospitalizations — up 52 from a week earlier — in Alberta. There are still 32 people in intensive care, up four from last week.

The seven-day average positivity rate has decreased to 21.86 per cent, down from 21.93 per cent a week ago.

In Central Zone, there are 84 people in hospital — up 13 from last week — and four in ICU, up two from a week earlier.

Thirty-eight new cases — down from 52 a week earlier — were identified in the City of Red Deer over the seven-day period ending this past Monday, according to geospatial mapping on the provincial government’s website.

Over that same time period, six cases — down 13 from last week — were identified in Red Deer County, nine in Lacombe County, and three in the City of Lacombe.

Over that same time period, Mountain View County recorded 21, Sylvan Lake had five, Clearwater County 14, two were identified in Stettler County and one was reported in Olds.

The City of Camrose added six new cases, Kneehill County added six, Drumheller added one and Camrose County added three.

Wetaskiwin County, including Maskwacis, had 28 new cases over the past seven days, while Rimbey, including West Ponoka County and park of Lacombe County, had one and Ponoka, including east Ponoka County, had five.
