HEADINGLEY, Man. — An Indigenous child welfare agency in Manitoba has called the RCMP after being hit by a cyberattack.

Southern First Nations Network of Care spokesman Jim Compton says the agency’s computers shut down Thursday and their IT department has been trying unsuccessfully to restore service since then.

Compton says he’s been told the ransomware attack has encrypted their files, making them unusable.

He says it’s probable personal data has been affected in the breach, but that the IT department might have more information during a news conference at the agency’s office west of Winnipeg on Sunday afternoon.

RCMP confirmed their Integrated Technological Crime Unit has been made aware of the incident and is investigating.

Compton says the agency may have to resort to using non-electronic files for foster families until the computers are fixed.
