A group of cyclists making a fundraising tour from Northern Alberta is due in Red Deer on Friday.

Byron Peters, a planning and development officer based in La Crete, left with riding partners Simon Wiebe and Calvin Elias on Sunday for the 960-km journey.

Peters was encouraged to start a fundraiser after announcing that he planned to ride his bike to a family event in Red Deer.

Peters had originally hoped to raise $50,000, earmarking the cash for the Mennonite Central Committee’s AIDS/HIV program.

He has now decided to shift 30 per cent of the funds to the Mennonite Disaster Services program, which is providing support and services to people whose homes were lost or damaged last month when the Bow River and its tributaries burst their banks.

Donations for the tour are being co-ordinated through the Mennonite Central Committee offices in Calgary and Winnipeg.
