Damage estimate in millions of dollars after fire destroys Wetaskiwin church

A church in a central Alberta community has been destroyed by fire.

WETASKIWIN — A church in a central Alberta community has been destroyed by fire.

More than 40 firefighters responded to the pre-dawn blaze at the First United Church in Wetaskiwin, about 70 kilometres southeast of Edmonton.

They spent most of their time trying to stop the flames from spreading to surrounding buildings.

There are no reports of injuries and RCMP say it’s too early to determine the cause of the fire.

The damage estimate is about $3 million.

Glen Neustaeter, a church board member, says there are about 100 people in the congregation.
