Celebrity dancer April Ferguson says learning to dance has helped her heal after a family tragedy.

Ferguson’s husband Chris died after a head-on collision last August, about a month before the launch of Sheraton Celebrity Dance Off 2019.

Ferguson said her husband knew she was going to be one of the eight celebrity dancers to perform in the April 13 competition and he was proud. It turned out that learning to dance, and the camaraderie, was beneficial.

“It’s really helped me rebuild, find my strength and get back out there,” Ferguson said.

The mother of three, and a full-time wealth consultant at Scotia Wealth Management, has since taken over her husband’s company, Acclaim Insulation.

“I’ve been doing all of this at once, but this whole (dance) experience is what I feel has got me through this time.”

She was paired with professional dance partner David Joseph and has been practising with fellow celebrity dancer Vinnie Taylor, who is dancing with Joseph’s wife, Olya. She said David and Olya have become close friends who have helped her through the grieving process.

“I can’t believe the relationships I’ve built. Truly this has been an amazing experience for me.”

Ferguson said practice has gone well, except for one tricky move in their routine.

“It’s going to be quite the production that we’re doing..”
