EDMONTON — An Edmonton company which voluntarily recalled three frozen pork products because of E. coli concerns has now expanded the dates of the recall.
Vinh Fat Foods originally recalled frozen pork spring rolls, pork buns and pork wontons sold between July 10 and Sept. 5.
On Wednesday, the latter date was extended to Sept. 8.
Last week, Alberta’s chief medical officer said 100 people in the province have gotten ill from E. coli linked to raw pork products, including 19 people who have been hospitalized.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency ordered a recall of pork products from V and T Meat and Food in Calgary and Hiep Thanh Trading in Edmonton, which was quickly followed by the Vinh Fat recall.
On Monday, the list was expanded to include two Calgary retailers — Trimming Fresh Meats Ltd. and Hiep Hoa Asian.
The CFIA has designated the recall a Class 1, or high hazard recall.
The agency warns food contaminated with this form of E. coli may not look or smelled spoiled, but could cause health problems and, in severe cases, possible kidney damage or death.
