A Canadian soldier killed Sunday in Afghanistan had roots in Red Deer.

Sergeant Martin Goudreault, 35, died when an improvised explosive device detonated during a foot patrol.

He moved to Red Deer with his family, living here from Grades 2-10 — attending Maryview School, St. Thomas Aquinas School and then at Camille J. Lerouge School. He later graduated from a high school in Timmons, Ont.

While in Red Deer, Goudreault was part of the Red Deer Army Cadets, serving each Remembrance Day. He later joined the military, becoming a combat engineer, responsible for bridge building and demolition.

Goudreault was not married and had no children, but was an uncle to his two younger sister’s children in Edmonton.

He was serving in Afghanistan as a member of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group. He died while on a foot patrol, about 15 kilometres southwest of Kandahar City, in the Panjwayi District.
