City administration will draft a plan to deal with the dead trees in Red Deer neighbourhoods.

Coun. Paul Harris brought the motion to council after hearing from residents in the community concerns about the carnage of dead and dying trees along the streets, boulevards and in neighbourhoods.

Harris told council he has learned it would take some 26 years to replace the current backlog of trees at the current rate of replacement. Harris said he would like to see trees replaced within a year of dying.

On Monday, council directed administration to come up with a plan including funding options to deal with the 26-year deficit in tree replacement. The plan is expected to come to council during the 2014 budget talks.
