RCMP and the provincial coroner’s office are investigating the death of a 51-year-old inmate at Bowden Institution Sunday.

The cause of death has not been determined, but there were no signs of foul play, says a news release from the prison.

Prison staff found Gerald Mayhew dead in his cell about 1:40 p.m. He has been serving a life sentence for second-degree murder since July 22, 1998.

The RCMP and the coroner’s office are always called in to investigate when someone dies in custody. The Correctional Service of Canada will also conduct a review of the incident.

Bowden Institution houses 563 medium-security inmates and 72 minimum-security inmates.
