Demolition of the burned-out downtown Red Deer apartment building was underway Friday.

An excavator was on site pulling down the walls of the 22-suite, low-income apartment at 5129 50th Ave.

The fire that began on the second floor sometime around 3 p.m. on Monday spread quickly to the attic and firefighters were unable to save the building.

No one was injured, but about 20 residents were left homeless. The Mustard Seed is gathering donations and other items to help the residents.

Built in the early 1950s, the building was once home to Welsh’s Saddlery and Western Wear.

The Waskasoo Hotel was built next door about the same time and burned down in 1994. The businesses destroyed included a handicraft and wedding store, a second-hand shop and an adult video store.
