There will be no fun in the sun this summer for Central Albertans at Discovery Canyon.

The City of Red Deer, in conjunction with the River Bend Golf and Recreation Area, announced the decision Friday to keep the amenity closed for the 2020 season. They also held consultations with Alberta Health Services.

In a post on the Discovery Canyon Facebook page, there were a number of reasons cited for the closure. Among the causes listed were, as a free amenity, there is no way to monitor traffic, there is little opportunity to physical distance, and gatherings might exceed the 100-person limit.

AHS recommended if it were to open, it would need to be fenced in to control access and there would need to be additional staff to monitor physical distancing on the lazy river and in the park area.

In addition, the tubes and washrooms would have to be cleaned regularly to meet guidelines.
