Traffic was backed up for kilometres on Hwy 2 Thursday morning after a power line crossing the highway snapped.
The highway was shut down briefly, but re-opened around 9:40 a.m.
RCMP were called in to shut down the highway in both directions so crews with Central Alberta Rural Electrification Association could repair the break.
Grant Hoff, the association’s operations manager, said the line broke around 7:15 a.m., likely just from wear and tear over time. Sometimes a lightning strike will damage a line and it will deteriorate.
Once the highway was closed, the repair work was not expected to take very long, he said. At 9:30 a.m. he estimated the area could be cleared within an hour or two.
“We’re just in the process of getting it put back up.”
There were no accidents or injuries caused by the downed power line. It served only a couple of homes on the west side of the highway.
