Downtown arson under police investigation

Red Deer RCMP are investigating an arson after suspects threw accelerant at a downtown apartment door and lit it on fire in Red Deer last week.

Police say around the incident occurred at an apartment building on 51 Street and 50 Avenue around 8:15 a.m. on June 28.

Three people in the apartment tried unsuccessfully to put out the fire before leaving by a rear window.

All tenants of the building were safely evacuated while firefighters put out the blaze.

The fire spread into the walls and ceiling before being extinguished. The extent of the building’s damage is not known at this time.

Police continue to interview witnesses and to analyze items found at the scene.
