Downtown Red Deer market won’t launch this summer

DBA expecting to launch weekly market in 2024

A weekly farmers market, scheduled to launch in downtown Red Deer this weekend, will no longer be happening this summer.

The Red Deer Downtown Business Association announced earlier this week the cancellation of its plans to host a downtown market every Saturday.

“We understand the disappointment this may cause, especially to our valued vendors and attendees who have shown tremendous support and enthusiasm for this new and exciting venture,” the DBA said in a Facebook post.

“Time constraints and logistical challenges have hindered our ability to effectively organize the event, build anticipation among the community, and secure a sufficient number of vendors.

“Many vendors have already made commitments for their summer schedules, making it increasingly clear that we would not be able to provide an event that would be fruitful for all parties involved. It is our firm belief that it would be unfair to proceed with an event that cannot deliver the experience our vendors and guests deserve.”

The weekly event was originally scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., which overlaps with the weekly Red Deer Public Market, which is set to begin its 53rd season this Saturday at Red Deer Polytechnic. That market runs from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Saturday until Thanksgiving long weekend.

In response to community feedback, the DBA is planning to launch an afternoon market for 2024, the Facebook post added.

“This revised schedule will allow vendors more flexibility and the ability to participate in other morning markets. We are committed to announcing and implementing these efforts earlier, providing vendors with ample time to plan their seasons accordingly.

“We appreciate the ongoing support and understanding of our vendors, stakeholders, and the community as a whole. The DBA remains dedicated to fostering a vibrant and thriving downtown, and we are confident that together we will create successful opportunities for all.”

There will still be live entertainment on Saturdays in the city’s downtown. Artists will perform every Saturday on the Ross Street Patio from 2-4 p.m. Additionally, there will be Tuesday to Friday programming, including an open mic night every Thursday.

The DBA’s Wednesday farmers market will continue as planned this season – the weekly event runs from 3:30-6:30 p.m. on Little Gaetz.
